"Still Learning": a Poem by @francescacastorr

Still learning

At six I learned to hate my nose

Flat, and not pronounced enough

At 11 I learned to hate my height

Too tall for the boys, too lanky for the girls

At 16 I learned to hate my body

Constantly reminded of how “really skinny” it was, always said with disgust

At 21 I learned to hate my body even more

Nurturing it with junk food

At 22 I learned that something needed to change

I hated how I felt

Slow and steady, I learned

To love all the things I hated and fully embrace them

At 28 I’m still learning, still loving;

still teaching myself to love all the parts of me

That were once seen in disgust
