Lately, I’ve been trying to tune into my creative side. It’s not often that I have the time to sit down and focus on something, but I’ve been making a conscious effort to take some time every night to work on a few projects I have on the go. Having a project to work on, especially when it’s something that makes you happy and mindful, is a good way to focus on your mental health in a positive way. Personally, I like having something always on the go that I can turn to in times of stress!
I’ve compiled a list of some fun DIY activities that can keep you busy:
Homemade Sugar Scrubs
I’ve made tons of sugar scrubs before; it’s actually quite easy to do and there are so many options. Plus, they are a great gift to give to someone else! One of my favourites is lavender and lemon.
Another one of my favourite’s is the coffee scrub.
Painting and Washi Tape are my two favourite combinations. It’s a relieving form of art because there’s no right or wrong way to paint. It’s more about expressing yourself in whatever way feels right. It also doesn’t have to be expensive! I go to the dollar store and buy a package of different sizes of paint brushes and some paint. I like using washi tape sometimes because it makes cool designs and patterns.
I’ve been experimenting with essential oils for a few years now. There’s a few blends that I really like and use almost on a daily basis. Lavender is my favourite; I’ve always used it in my baths along with epsom salt. I use peppermint oil on my temples whenever I have a headache. I also bought a roller-balm that I roll on my wrists and temples; it’s filled with lavender, peppermint oil and eucalyptus.
This isn’t DIY related but I really wanted to mention it anyway! I’ve been practicing yoga a few times a week and honestly, it’s been the most rewarding feeling. At first, it gave me a lot of anxiety going, mostly because of my social anxiety. Once I got into the routine of going, it became my safe space. Having that one hour to really relax my body and my mind is so refreshing! I understand that yoga, meditation and mindfulness isn’t for everyone, which is totally cool, but it’s worth trying out if you haven't before. In the few weeks I’ve started doing yoga again, I’ve noticed benefits such as:
- Relief of my back pain
- Increased flexibility
- A clearer and more positive mind while practising
- A more positive body awareness
